Riding across Australia on horseback exceeded my wildest expectations! Though I began the journey blind to what lay ahead, each day, my eyes were opened to the sheer beauty of the land as it unraveled around us. The majesty of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales. The idyllic countryside of Victoria. The rolling green hills full of magnificent gumtrees to the scrublands and sweeping sea cliffs of South Australia. And, finally, a world of wildflowers, wheat fields, and crystal-clear beaches in Western Australia. The uniqueness of each state signaled a clear beginning, middle, and end that made the journey feel complete.
Yet, in preparing to ride east to west coast, the way seemed so shrouded in mystery. For only a few people have ever attempted it–and never with a single horse. This, in turn, filled me with trepidation. Can I do it?
I didn’t know. I doubted.
Now, in looking back, I smile softly at my past self, knowing just how possible it is. How worth it.
I write this “How To” guide to shed light on how it’s done, and hopefully throw open the door to others who aspire to ride across Australia.
This is my 4th “How To” guide.
The 1st–How To Walk Across America
The 2nd–How To Ride Across America On Horseback
The 3rd–How To Paddle The Yukon River
Each one is fundamentally a love letter to my past self, as funny as that may sound. At the end of any adventure, I am always left to reflect on who I was at the beginning–when I knew nothing, when I felt hopeless, desperate, forlorn, in over my head, alone– and how I wish I had someone to help me more. These guides are my way of offering a hand, retroactively, to my younger self, and everyone like her with the same dream.
